sinking to the bottom

Suspended somewhere
mesopelagic,
aware of the catsharks and dragonfishes,
the coelacanths and firefly squid,
I gaze down to the abyss
and feel myself sinking.
Contemplating the desire to
develop scale and fin--
to dive deeper,
I'm turned and twisted
as whalesong bends my bones
into tuning forks,

forcing me to face the light--
