Monday Musings: March 17, 2014 - Form Prompt

Yes, yes... I know it's Wednesday.

Prompt: Write a Limerick

What to do: Aw, come on. You've heard at least a few of these little diddys -- think Mother Goose or a good ol' humorously lewd bit of fun... Five lines; first two lines rhyme with each other, the third and fourth rhyme together, and the fifth line either repeats the first line or rhymes with it. It is written in anapestic rhythm with an example demonstrated with syllable marks below (the back-slashes are stresses, the dashes are not):

Line 1 - / - - / - - /
Line 2 - / - - / - - /
Line 3 - / - - /
Line 4 - / - - /
Line 5 - / - - / - - /

Prompt inspired by: St. Patrick's Day and the city of Limerick, Ireland (Why not? I've never been there but it looks and sounds like a great place to visit. It is Ireland after all!)

My take on this week's prompt:

A Faerie McClary

There once was a Yank named McClary
Who was incredibly short and quite hairy.
He reinvented his past
claiming birth in Belfast
and passed himself off as a faerie.

Monday Musings: March 10, 2014 - Image Prompt

Prompt:
Sunbather, 2014. Photo by Letitia Minnick

What to do: Write, film, compose, draw, paint, or otherwise express yourself based on the image above. If you are open to sharing, just put a link to your inspired creation in the comments section of this post. :)

Prompt inspired by: My (almost) nine-year-old four-legged son, Milo. :)

Please forgive the blatant favoritism this week... Milo just received what could be the best (albeit most traumatic) grooming he has ever had and, after his being extremely ill most of this winter, I could just sit and look upon him for hours. (We're still a bit watchful of his health but trusting that he has recovered and will only get healthier with the oncoming Springtime.)

My take on this week's prompt:

Milo

Mildly
insistent, this
little white dog
owns all my heart.

Update: Monday Musings 2/24/24 Poem Featured at Poets Online!

"Winter Ronka" was chosen by Poets Online as one of the featured poems for the February 2014 Ronka prompt. It can be viewed at poetsonline.org under Archives, ronka / Ken Ronkowitz.

You just never know what will happen if you dare to put yourself out there... ;)

Shrove Tuesday

A simple pastry
of sugared fat
entices the office drone
to make the convenient choice--
offering absolution
by way of tomorrow's sun
rising on a day of ashes
and having suffered
through the long night
of heartburn.

Monday Musings: March 3, 2014 - Word/Phrase Prompt

Prompt: An imaginary trip

What to do: Write, film, compose, draw, paint, or otherwise express yourself based on the concept of imagining yourself somewhere other than you are (take a mental vacation). If you are open to sharing, just put a link to your inspired creation in the comments section of this post. :)

Prompt inspired by: Donegal Square and McCarthy's Restaurant (and Greg)

Living so close to tourist attractions has its perks as well as its frustrations. One of the perks for Greg and me is McCarthy's - good food surrounded by all things Celtic (which certainly appeals to the majority of my personal heritage). If you ever find yourself in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, don't skip Main Street in the historic district (north side). Stop in and have a pot or a pint. If you are lucky, maybe Furbish* will be there too...

*Donegal Square is a dog friendly shop. Furbish is the owner's "furkid".

My take on this week's prompt:

Shamrocks in Snow

A rare Saturday respite
sharing a pot of tea at McCarthy's.
Simply sitting quiet
watching the flurries
magically transform Bethlehem
into Belfast.
